RE
At Burford, we want our children to have a deep understanding of different religions so that they can connect with their peers, school community and the wider world. We want them to learn from many religions and world views about different ways of life in local, national and global contexts. Our hope is that this will help them to find meaning in their own life whilst respecting differences of opinion and developing cultural sensitivity which they will carry with them as adults.
Through our RE curriculum, children will be exposed to a range of religions and cultures. Stereotypes will be challenged and misconceptions will be addressed - dismantling prejudice and discrimination and promoting empathy and the celebration of difference. They will be presented with provoking and challenging questions about human life, beliefs, communities and philosophies, and be encouraged to identify similarities which can connect us. We will empower our children to articulate their own beliefs and reflections effectively, and to question and respectfully interrogate. We will provide a space for them to ponder, unpick, connect and question. We will bring learning to life and improve their cultural capital by providing opportunities to visit places of worship and to engage with visitors from a range of religious backgrounds. They will become empathetic citizens more concerned with what connects us than what tears us apart, they will be respectful of others whilst politely questioning to better understand beliefs or practises which differ from our own.
At Burford we use the Kapow scheme of work to support the teaching of RE.
Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their children from all or parts of the RE curriculum.
