Our Curriculum
We are a forward-thinking and ambitious school who put children at the core of all we do. We recognise the importance of academic success for later life and are driven to ensure all children leave with the skills needed to read, write and do maths well. We are equally driven to provide enriching experiences, empower our children and build character.
At Burford, we are building a brighter future for all
This is achieved through 3 core strands within our curriculum: belong, explore, care.
During the autumn term we focus on the concept of BELONG. This starts with an identity theme that considers ourselves, differences, challenges and uniqueness. It builds relationships, understanding, empathy and respect. We then move into a local history theme so children build a understanding of where they are now based on what has happened before.
In spring term we move on to the concept of EXPLORE. Here we focus primarily on the geographical and world history elements of the national curriculum. We want to take our children beyond what they already know and have experienced and develop a sense of curiosity and interest in the wider world. This will be underpinned through further development of empathy and understanding of the wider world.
In the summer term the focus turns to the concept of CARE. Here we study humanities, the natural world, science and social issues to deepen understanding and create connections. We want children to have knowledge and understanding of current issues and challenges and recognise that they can make a positive difference. That the children of Burford can make positive change through the projects they take on.
Alongside this, our school motto is: 'ATTEND, ASPIRE, ACHIEVE.'
Our children ATTEND school every day, both physically and mentally, because they look forward to learning. They feel safe and seen within our school. Enriching activities encourage children to be here. Pastoral support is available for all yet targets our most vulnerable pupils.
Our children ACHIEVE through quality teaching and learning delivered through a rich, progressive and ambitious curriculum. We focus on ensuring pupils are ready for their next stage of education. Adaptations ensure all children are stretched and supported to achieve their full potential.
Our children ASPIRE through removing barriers and believing anything is possible. Representation is a core aspect of our curriculum and we recognise and nurture talent. We want children of Burford to know they can be anything and do anything.
We have worked hard to develop a curriculum throughout school which is engaging, enabling, motivating and challenging. We aim to be inclusive and equitable as a school so that everyone feels that they belong, can try their best, make mistakes and learn from them. We help and encourage everyone to achieve high standards so that we can be aspirational now and in our futures.
